Everyone needs a purpose….
Today I want to talk about how important it is in life to have a purpose…. and I’m not talking about work commitments here! I’m talking about a real purpose…having something or someone to live for – that needs you and that looks forward to seeing you. Living without a purpose in your life – can leave you open to feeling lonely, depressed and without reason. Think about it… when you have a purpose in your life… be it a relationship, a pet or even a friend in need… Your motivation for life increases and pushes you to live your life fully with reason. If you own a dog… think about when you come home and how excited and pleased the dog is to see you! He jumps around you like crazy…making you feel loved and needed which in turn creates positive emotions and makes you feel good. The dog give you a purpose… not only because he is so happy to see you and makes you feel great about yourself… be also because he needs you and couldn’t survive without you.
Having a good relationship gives you purpose. If you live with a partner – how do you act when they come home in the evenings…or if you haven’t seen them in a few days?! Do you make them feel truly appreciated? Do you show them how pleased you are to see them? What about vice versa…. How do they act when they see you?! A lot of couples these days go all out with a glance and a grunt hello… eh do you think that gives your partner purpose and motivates them in the relationship? Do you think they look forward to receiving that? I doubt it!! So come on… make a change… make them feel loved… needed… appreciated… show them how pleased you are to see them and it will no doubt better your relationship! Now I’m not saying you actually have to jump up and down like a wired-up puppy, licking your beloved’s face and barking (they’d probably send you straight to the loony bin!!) All I’m saying is to act pleased and happy to see them instead of the auld grunts and barely looking up from your daily newspaper!
Having someone react in a positive way when they see us, send endorphins around our body and makes us feel like this life IS worthwhile... that there is a purpose! Having a person or an animal in your life that needs you and looks forward to seeing you, can really ground you. It can stop you from being totally self-absorbed and remind you that life is about others as well as yourself.
I hear some of you asking… what if you live alone and don’t have a partner. Or what if you don’t have any animals to take care of?! Well there are plenty of other things in life that can give you a purpose and that can make you feel needed and appreciated. Charity work, visiting and old age nursing home or even volunteering in your local animal sanctuary would defiantly have people or animals looking forward to seeing you and would in turn give you a purpose! I have a neighbour that is in her later years in life and lives on her own. I often pop in to see her for a cuppa and a chat… it gives me a purpose as I know how much she looks forward to my company and makes me feel appreciated and good about myself for helping someone else… by just having a chat and a cup of tea! You see, it can be the little things you do in your life that can really make a difference to someone else’s life in a positive way and in turn make them feel good about themselves.
